5/16: Geomagnetic Storm Underway
![]()
A solar geomagnetic storm has been developing over the past several hours as charged particles from the Sun interact with Earth’s magnetic field. Forecasts indicate periods of G2 (Moderate) and G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm activity, capable of triggering vivid auroras and minor disruptions to technology systems.
🌌 Possible effects may include: 🟢 Bright northern & southern lights
📡 Satellite communication disturbances
🛰️ GPS and navigation fluctuations
⚡ Minor power grid instability
📻 High-frequency radio interference
These storms are often caused by coronal holes or solar eruptions releasing streams of solar wind into space. When those particles reach Earth, they energize the atmosphere and create stunning auroral displays across higher latitudes.
While most people won’t notice major impacts, space weather agencies continue monitoring conditions closely as solar activity remains elevated during the current solar cycle.
