X1 Flare!
![]()
• Maximum X-ray flux (past 2 hours): X1.07
This is a strong X-class solar flare (or the peak flux reached in that window). X-class flares are the most powerful category and can cause significant short-term effects on Earth’s ionosphere.
• Recent Events:
• Radio Blackouts (R2 moderate at 11:30 UTC from an M9+ flare, and R1 minor earlier) — These affect HF (high-frequency) radio communications on the sunlit side of Earth (e.g., parts of Asia/Pacific earlier).
• Type II Radio Emission at ~07:30 UTC (started ~06:57 UTC, estimated shock speed 313 km/s). Type II bursts indicate a shock wave in the solar corona, usually from a CME (Coronal Mass Ejection). The relatively low speed (313 km/s) suggests a slower-moving eruption compared to fast ones (>1000 km/s).
• M7.76 Solar Flare at 07:18 UTC — A strong M-class flare just before the Type II detection.
What does this mean overall?
The Sun (specifically Active Region 4455, centrally located and Earth-facing) has been active today with multiple strong flares, including near-X-class events. The Type II emission confirms some eruptive activity and a possible CME, but the low estimated velocity points to a slower-moving ejection.
This aligns with your previous update: big flares, but the associated eruptions may not be particularly massive or fast. Any potential Earth impact would likely be minor/glancing at best, with possible weak geomagnetic effects in the coming days (e.g., minor auroras at high latitudes, limited disruptions).
Bottom line: Elevated solar activity right now, mainly causing temporary radio blackouts. No major geomagnetic storm is strongly expected from these specific events, but the region remains capable of more flares. — Cengiz Avci
