7/1 Incoming Geomagnetic Storms
![]()
Ok, so there seems to be a bit of excitement on the internet about the incoming X1.1 Solar Flare’s CME causing an HP = 6 (G2) Geomagnetic Storm. Here’s NOAA’s updated info on that:
First, according to NOAA’s Geomagnetic Storm Forecast, yes, some areas *may* see an HP = 6 (G2) Geomagnetic Storms, but the greatest chances for that are only 45% and only in the northern U.S. states and Canada. The rest of us below that line only have a 20% see of seeing HP = 5 (G1) Geomagnetic Storms. (Note: the Geomagnetic Storm Forecast chart is based on UTC timezone.)
Second, the timing for the CME’s arrival on most websites shows it coming in on July 3rd, but NOAA’s info in the Incoming Geomagnetic Storm CDT Timeline chart shows the CME arriving late evening on 7/2. So that means overnight 7/2-7/3 is gonna be a rough night for some of us. May I suggest preventive measures beginning tonight or tomorrow morning?
Third, is it a large CME, so there’s a 20% chance it’ll keep all of us in and out of HP = 5 (G1) Geomagnetic Storms through 7/2.
Fourth, we’ll be out of the Geomagnetic Storms on 7/4, but it’s going to be a slightly agitating day with frequent HP = 4.0 measurements.
