8/2 Recap

I know most of y’all probably already know we had a CME come through today!

It came in 2 steps, the first around 8/2 @ 6.26a CDT, taking our Solar Wind Speed from ~290 km/sec to 350 km/sec and taking our HP Index from HP = 1.0 to HP = 4.0. The 2nd step was around 10.00a CDT when Solar Wind Speed became >400 km/sec and our HP Index went from HP = 3.0 to HP = 5 (G1) Geomagnetic Storm levels. Fortunately it was short- duration. Our HP Index dropped down to HP = 3.0 @ 2.00p CDT, and our Solar Wind Speed dropped back into the 300 km/sec range about 7.00p CDT this evening. NOAA’s anticipating we may have some periodic increases in these numbers since we’ll be sitting in the CME until about noon CDT tomorrow (20% chance HP = 5 middle N. America and 55% chance HP = 6 northern U.S. states), but the following 2 days are supposed to be calm!

Solar Flares stayed in the C Class range today and NOAA’s dropped their expectations for M Class Solar Flares to 20%, so these should be non-eventful for a few days.

Electron Saturation stayed below its Alert Threshold, as did Proton Saturation. They both should stay in these comfortable ranges for the next 3 days.
